Diagnostic Ultrasound
Sometimes hands-on assessment alone doesn’t give the full picture. Diagnostic ultrasound allows us to see what’s happening inside muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints in real time, helping clarify the cause of pain or injury.
At The Moving Body, musculoskeletal ultrasound is used to support accurate diagnosis and guide the most appropriate treatment plan.
What is musculoskeletal ultrasound?
Musculoskeletal ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed images of soft tissues and joints. Unlike X-rays, it allows us to visualise tendons, muscles, ligaments, nerves and joint fluid — the structures most commonly involved in pain and movement problems.
Because the scan is performed in real time, tissues can be assessed during movement, which can reveal issues that don’t appear on static imaging.
What can it help identify?
Diagnostic ultrasound is commonly used to assess:
- Tendon injuries and tendinopathy
- Muscle strains and tears
- Bursitis and joint effusions
- Ligament injuries
- Calcific tendinitis
- Nerve entrapment
Scanned areas include the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, ankle and foot.
Please note! Chris does not scan or treat spinal issues.
What to expect
Appointments last 30 minutes. After discussing your symptoms and examining the area, a painless ultrasound scan is performed using a small handheld probe and gel applied to the skin.
Findings are explained during the appointment, along with advice on next steps. If injection therapy is appropriate, this can be administered within the same appointment. A report will be emailed to following the appointment.
Availability
Diagnostic ultrasound is available every Thursday by independent practitioner Chris Pruvey here at The Moving Body. You may be referred following an osteopathic appointment or you can book directly using our online booking service.
